Architect Meets Baker: How My Architectural Background Inspires My Cake Designs
TL;DR: I'm a Manchester-based minimalist cake designer with a background in architecture. Floc Bakes offers elegant, modern celebration cakes and cookies, crafted with the same principles of form, balance and intentional design. Whether you're marking a milestone or hosting a stylish event, I create clean, custom cakes using buttercream and white chocolate ganache — all made to be remembered.
From Drawing Sheets to Baking Sheets
Before I started Floc, I spent years immersed in architecture — studying proportions, light, texture, and material. The precision of it all drew me in. But over time, I found myself wanting to create in a way that felt more personal, more immediate, and more tactile.
Baking had always been in the background, something I turned to for joy and creativity. Slowly, that joy became a direction. And just a month ago, Floc was born.
Launching a cake business felt like a leap — but it also felt natural. It wasn’t a departure from design, but an evolution. Cake, like architecture, is all about space, detail, and intention. I still work with volume. I still think in form. The difference now? It’s edible.

What “Architecturally Inspired” Means to Me
When I describe my work as “architecturally inspired,” I don’t mean cakes that look like buildings. I mean cakes designed with the same principles I used in an architectural practice:
- Clean lines
- Deliberate shapes
- Minimalist details
- Structure with meaning
In architecture, every element has to serve a purpose — and I approach cake design the same way. There’s no clutter. No extras. Just thoughtful composition, guided by balance.
This mindset is why I’m drawn to minimalist cake design. And it turns out, I’m not alone. Minimalist cakes are one of 2025’s biggest cake trends, celebrated for their subtle textures and refined simplicity (source).
Material Matters — Designing with Edible Mediums
Cake, buttercream, sugar, ganache — they’re all new materials for me, but I approach them like a designer would. What are their properties? How do they hold shape? What finishes do they create?
I love working with buttercream for its soft, sculpted forms and subtle textures. When I want clean, crisp edges or more structure, I turn to white chocolate ganache. Sometimes, a single chocolate accent or tonal flourish is all a design needs.
Minimalism doesn’t mean empty. It means edited. Every element is chosen with care and placed with purpose.

Every Design Is Bespoke
Because I’m just starting out, each cake I make feels extra meaningful. I treat every order as a one-off — a chance to bring someone’s taste, aesthetic, or moment to life.
Sometimes that means drawing from a colour palette. Other times, it’s inspired by the vibe of a venue or the tone of a celebration. I work closely with each client to make sure the design feels truly theirs.
Over time, I’m excited to build a body of work that reflects that balance: soft and structured, minimal and full of meaning.

Timeless, Not Trendy
Even though I’m just beginning this business, I’ve been thinking about design for a long time — and that shapes everything I do.
Trends can be fun, but I’m more drawn to the timeless. Whether it’s a subtle texture, a restrained palette, or a quiet contrast, I aim to make cakes that will still feel beautiful and thoughtful years from now.
I take inspiration from sculpture, architecture, ceramics, and even interior design. Anything that balances softness and structure, simplicity and impact.
Where Art and Celebration Meet
Floc is still young — just one month in — but already, I’m finding so much joy in designing cakes and cookies that feel calm, creative, and beautifully composed.
If you're looking for something different — a cake that’s minimal, elegant, and custom-made with intention — I’d love to hear from you.
